Upper limb problems such as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) or Work-Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD) normally gradually develop over time and include symptoms such as:
- pain, aching, or tenderness
- tingling or numbness
Repetitive strain injuries are related to the overuse of muscles and tendons in the body. These are as a result of performing repetitive activities sometimes at high intensity often for a long period and without rest. Other contributing factors can be:
- Poor posture
- Working in awkward positions for long periods of time
- Climate and temperature
On examination we often find tightness and overactivity in one group of muscles and weakness and under activity in others, resulting in an imbalance that reinforces the movement dysfunction.
Physiotherapy treatment for RSI will be aimed at reducing inflammation and pain, restoring flexibility and muscle balance.
This may include techniques such as:
- joint and soft tissue release work
In addition, your Bodytone physiotherapist will attempt to help you identify the cause of the RSI and suggest modifications to the task or job which is a cause of the symptoms and provide a program of exercise that will help you manage the condition.
