Following surgery or a bone fracture, it is important to mobilise the affected joint and/or limb and to strengthen the surrounding muscles.

Postoperative and post fracture rehabilitation may be required following:

  • Bone fracture (breaking a bone)
  • Shoulder surgery – arthroscopy, tendon or ligament repairs, decompressions, joint replacement, fracture management, acromioclavicular joint repair
  • Hip – arthroscopy, labral repair, joint replacement, injection
  • Knee – ligament, cartilage or tendon repair, arthroscopy, injection, joint replacement
  • Spinal – fusions, stabilisations, discectomy, injections
  • Ankle – arthroscopy, ligament repair, joint replacement
  • Foot – bunion and toe surgery, fracture management

Your physiotherapist will assess your condition, discuss this with you and focus treatments on:

  • Restoring optimal mobility
  • Strengthening weakened and disused muscles
  • Compensation for any functional loss
  • Restoring normal movement patterns and habits

In post-surgical rehabilitation, the majority of the time the physiotherapist will follow a treatment plan, written by the surgeon and their team. The Physiotherapist will use this plan as a guide on how best to manage and progress your condition.
