Project Description

Arthritis can cause pain in one particular part of the body or more widespread joint and muscle pain. There are more than 200 types of arthritis and related conditions of arthritis, including osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These cause pain, heat, and stiffness in your joints and can affect people of all ages.

In osteoarthritis, the joints show signs of wear and tear, which increases as time goes by. In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the joints, which can become red and swollen if not treated.

Physiotherapy is an important part of treatment for most people with arthritis and is aimed at helping you to maintain or resume an active and independent life both at home and work.

Bodytone Physiotherapists can help you to understand what happens to your joints and muscles when you have arthritis and will offer both advice and treatments on how to protect your joints

Your physiotherapist will start by asking you questions and examining the joint(s) you’re finding painful. This assessment will let them tailor the treatment to your needs. Treatment may include:

  • a specific program of exercises
  • pain-relief treatments such as heat or ice packs, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), massage, manipulation, acupuncture, or taping
  • general advice on increasing your activity level and avoiding exercise-related injuries
  • providing splints or walking aids or splints to help with mobility and keeping you independent
